yum!

today jay and i tried ethiopian food for the first time, at a restaurant called abay in east liberty. we both recommend it! you eat without utensils, which may sound messy, but is actually neater than eating with a fork (for me anyways-bts (remember that nickname jay?)) it is served with a flatbread called injera(it reminded us of pancakes) which you use to pick up the food. the menu is pretty short, but everything we had was excellent. they have about ten meat dishes but on our sampler platter, three out of our four choices were vegetarian. i'm finding more and more that when i have the choice, i pick and enjoy vegetarian options more than meat. of course as long as i work at chick-fil-a and boston market exists, i will still have slight carnivore cravings. one of our favorite dishes was the ayib be gomen-collard greens with homemade cheese. the only other time i had greens, they were prepared by my neighbor in oakland who was originally from the south and cooked with waaayyyy too much salt! these were very fresh and delightful. i got a spiced tea called yekemem shai and actually finished two mugfulls which is unheard of for me and tea. jay had ethiopian coffee that even i, a coffee disdainer, had to admit was good, or at least better than any other coffee i have ever tried. we had a lovely burnt almond torte for dessert. all and all, wonderful and great service too!
